Deezer Launches Free Tool to Detect AI Music in Playlists
For years people made jokes about robots taking over music. Now they might already be sitting quietly in your playlist.
A new free tool from the music streaming platform Deezer is giving listeners a chance to find out how much music made by artificial intelligence has slipped into their libraries.. To be honest the results might be a little unsettling.
The tool works across a lot of services including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, TIDAL, SoundCloud and several others. You connect your account let it scan your playlists and within moments you will get a breakdown of how much of your music appears to be created by artificial intelligence.
The idea is simple. It has big implications.
What is fascinating and maybe a little weird is how hard it is to spot music made by intelligence. Most listeners think they would know immediately if a song was made by a machine.. It turns out that is probably not true. Studies have shown that people struggle to tell the difference between tracks made by humans and tracks made by intelligence. The line between music made by humans and music made by intelligence is getting blurry and it is getting blurry fast.
The amount of music made by artificial intelligence is staggering.
Deezer says it is now receiving 75,000 tracks made by artificial intelligence every single day, which is around 44% of all music uploaded to the platform. That is half of all the music uploaded to the platform. Not year, not someday, but right now.
That number alone is like something from a science fiction story.
The company claims its detection technology can identify music made by intelligence with extremely high accuracy by looking at audio signatures that are commonly associated with music made by artificial intelligence. This is technology that Deezer has been using internally for quite some time. Now it is giving it to listeners.
This move also reflects the growing frustration among music fans.
Many listeners just want to know what is going on. They do not necessarily hate music made by intelligence. Some listeners are curious about music made by intelligence. Others like to experiment with music made by intelligence.. There is a difference, between choosing to listen to music made by artificial intelligence and finding out that music made by artificial intelligence has been added to your playlists without you realizing it.
That is where things get complicated.
The music industry is still trying to figure out what artificial intelligence means for artists, royalties, recommendations and authenticity. Some platforms rely heavily on creators telling them if their music is made by intelligence while others are looking into automated detection systems. Nobody seems to agree on the solution yet.
Meanwhile listeners are left wondering whether the next track they save was written by a songwriter who put their heart into a melody or if it was made by intelligence in 30 seconds.
Maybe it matters who made the music. Maybe it does not matter who made the music.
If you have ever looked at one of those playlists made by an algorithm and thought, "Where did this song even come from?" you can finally get some answers.
Do not be too surprised if your playlist turns out to contain some music made by artificial intelligence that you never invited.
